Securing green energy independence

In this issue of Sustainability Today, we have featured Lemon Energy as our Sustainable Energy Solutions Company of the Year.

As the world’s traditional power supply infrastructure continues to change, individuals and businesses alike are looking for better power alternatives, which can assure not only power security, but independence from the fossil-fuel backed energy ecosystem. That’s where Lemon Energy comes in.

Lemon Energy is on a mission to provide better power to customers, while simultaneously lowering carbon emissions and championing sustainability. The company is at the forefront of green solutions to power supply issues that have traditionally been the sole domain of diesel, and have quickly built a reputation for innovation and outstanding customer support.

Established by brothers Jonathan and Adam Higgs, the company was initially founded when the pair were searching for a cheaper alternative to home battery storage. The founders realised there was a gap in the market for robust, reliable and sustainable power that didn’t break the bank, so launched Lemon Energy In 2021 to create affordable, renewable options designed for the most challenging power supply environments.

Today, Lemon Energy supplies electricians, power hire companies and events across the UK with innovative, renewable power solutions through its unique brand of energy-efficient, high quality, intelligent hybrid and battery-based power systems, tailor-made to reduce emissions and improve resilience.

A Made in Britain accredited manufacturer, Lemon Energy believes in better power for people through reduced emissions and delivering energy in a more renewable way. The company approaches the sector in a truly innovative way, marrying clean, green solar power with traditional supply methods to tackle the toughest scenarios.

“Our philosophy is based on being able to deliver solutions and there really isn’t a situation where we can’t make a battery storage or a hybrid system work.” says Owner and Director, Jonathan Higgs, “We found that the market wanted more complete systems rather than just a battery, so our expertise is in unique projects that are normally unachievable by standard means.”

Fully IP rated and climate controlled, Lemon Power is the company’s bespoke all-in-one power solution. These units cover on and off grid applications and uniquely hold everything needed to run the system inside its weatherproof container, meaning they are ready to go upon delivery with both grid and generator connections.

Lemon Energy systems intelligently balances loads across multiple assets and incorporates them in battery storage, eliminating the inefficiencies of multiple under-loaded generators and improving its resilience. The company’s systems frequently take advantage of cheaper off-peak tariffs and stores lower-cost electricity overnight for deployment during the day.

By enabling its generators to operate only at optimal load conditions, Lemon Power can reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 50% or more. When paired with solar generation this significantly reduces reliance on the grid and allows clients the freedom to secure their own power requirements. Jonathan explains, “As a business, we’ve also had a lot of inquiries about larger scale systems to help clients from estates, farms and holiday parks with their energy security and independence.” He says, “Upgrading their supply from the National Grid could take months, or even years in some cases, but we can get a system installed in weeks. We’re able to deliver solutions in a fraction of a time and put clients in control of their own power.”

The company’s all-in-one hybrid power solution, Lemon Flex, is perfect for these transitioning, off-grid applications where grid connectivity is unreliable or unsuitable. Coming complete with integrated generators, Lemon Flex provides a robust hybrid solution that combines batteries, solar and high-efficiency generators fitted with UPS switchover speed capability.

Traditionally the hired temporary power sector has shied away from renewable energy as the demands of large scale events typically require more power than solar or other green energy systems can deliver. However it is in this sector, that Lemon Energy has cemented its position as a global leader in renewable energy.

Spearheaded by its cutting-edge Lemon Juice solar system, Lemon Energy’s flexible temporary power solutions offer deployable units that can be transported on a pickup truck. Clients simply transport it to the work site, unfold it on the ground and the system is ready to deliver 1.3-129kWp of output, with a variety of solar panel arrangements from 1-4 wide in landscape and portrait.

The company’s ability to provide bespoke solutions to complex problems underpins its entire operation. Lemon Energy benefits from a completely in-house manufacturing process, which gives the company more control over configuration, quality and customisation, as well as decreased turnaround time.

Lemon Energy’s commitment to quality, resilience, and local manufacturing can’t be overstated. Its manufactured systems are proudly Made in Britain accredited, with 10 year warranties and can all be recycled directly by the company at the end of their lifecycles, further solidifying Lemon Energy’s dedication to sustainability.

“Our approach is all about repairability, serviceability and long life.” says Jonathan, “We make products that last and all of our products are designed to be fully repairable. While we offer a full warranty and repair them for clients ourselves, anybody who understands the battery technology could repair or upgrade our products themselves, which is incredibly important not just for customer satisfaction, but for wider sustainability goals”

As a business at the cutting edge of renewable energy, this in-house manufacturing capability also means Lemon Energy can offer more complex solutions and deliver where non-standard items can’t. By manufacturing in-house, the company can not only tweak to customer spec, but incorporate an elevated level of customer feedback in the design and development process.

“One of the things that we’ve developed recently came from a few meetings with some of the larger event organisers.” explained Jonathan, “These types of events can sometimes have 130 generators for a four day event, so the scale is massive. We asked how do we scale up our offering to meet those power demands?”

The company’s answer was a fully articulated trailer system. Based on a 40ft HGV trailer foundation, this system was designed with direct feedback from clients and is currently being developed in-house by Lemon Energy. Carrying a huge amount of solar capability, the still unreleased system also contains a generator and a massive amount of battery storage which complements its output power.

“Everything on it is preinstalled, so there’s no connection on-site.” says Jonathan, “You unfold the solar portion of it and it’s just working. For large events it’s perfect, as it’s fast deployable and involves minimal manpower and technical requirements. It’s just working the minute it gets there.”

Particularly impactful to the hire market, the company’s innovative temporary power solutions integrate with existing generators through battery systems powered by solar. In the last six months, the Lemon Energy’s focus in this area has paid dividends, with the company in talks with several large UK-based events to help migrate them off diesel sources to more solar powered solutions.

Through Lemon Energy’s game-changing products, festivals, trade events and construction projects can capitalise on solar in a meaningful way. By developing systems that make the requirements for extra workers and technical expertise less impactful for clients, Lemon Energy is making the greener option more attractive for these large-scale events and changing the landscape of on-demand site power.

As Lemon energy looks ahead, with new products and an expanded consumer base on the horizon, the future looks bright. Over the next three to six months, the company aims to continue its push for brand awareness and hope to grow even more partnerships with businesses that could benefit from its unique blend of hybrid power solutions.

In more long-term plans, Lemon Energy is aiming to revolutionise the hire market further still and help this busy sector fully transition to green energy from diesel, solidifying its reputation as the leading supplier in this arena.

By combining proven technologies with intelligent system design, Lemon Energy helps customers from all industries cut carbon, control costs and maintain the reliability their operations depend on. With the future of energy looking more volatile than ever, Lemon Energy’s unique, innovative solutions provide clients with an alternative to traditional supplies that offers security and independence.

Lemon Energy’s ability to design, integrate and deliver complete power solutions that align with operational needs as well as sustainability, is allowing the company to access previously untapped opportunities and is changing the landscape of renewable power. Its steadfast dedication to quality, cutting-edge design and customer requirements is proving why Lemon Energy is a leading voice in the cleaner, smarter and more resilient power revolution.
