Leading the centrifugal pump industry for 76 years

In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are delighted to select PEMO PUMPS as our Pump & Valves Company of the Year.

We have featured PEMO PUMPS previously as our Pump Manufacturing Company of the Month and wish to extend our congratulations to the whole team for reaching the company’s 76th anniversary during 2023.

PEMO PUMPS is a brand of Perissinotto S.p.A. and was established in 1947 by Antonio Perissinotto.

Illustrious history
After the Second World War, the pumps were utilised in the marble and granite cutting processes, using sand as part of the abrasive mix to further the expansion of the construction industry. By the 1970’s, PEMO PUMPS successfully diversified into new markets such as the steel industry and during the 1980’s, enjoyed a move into the chemical and wastewater treatment sectors. Throughout the decades, the dedicated team further developed its pump portfolio, welcoming the dawning of innovative new technology and materials that showed increasing resistance to abrasion and corrosive agents.

We caught up with Massimo Ghio, Sales Area Manager at Perissinotto S.p.A. PEMO PUMPS for further insight, “It has been a very intense 12 months: the world of pumps is in constant turmoil and our focus as a sustainability-oriented company is slowly taking shape – this is thanks largely to compliance with ESG issues and the ethical program undertaken by the company.”

“Despite the ongoing difficult geo-political situations, we try to move towards a diversification of markets that allows us to be appreciated across the main world markets.”

“2023 was an important year, where we were able to confirm the good results of the post-COVID years and increase turnover by more than 10% over 2022. We expect a slight slowdown in the first quarter of 2024, due to a structural contraction in global markets.”

“We have successfully invested in a new warehouse, which will expand our production area by about 2,000m2 – this will allow us to concentrate further on the production chain of our flagship products. Moreover, we have embarked on a path of internal reorganisation of various departments, with important investments for the purchase of new latest generation machinery for mechanical processing.”
“Our company philosophy is to always offer customised products, following the market and the opportunities that lie ahead. In this regard, we have developed on average two – three new pump models every year in order to offer highly competitive products for each specific application.”

“Since PEMO PUMPS does not have a series production, we can offer over 3,000 pump models with fully customised hydraulics and materials. Therefore, our goal is to follow the customer from the design to the start-up of the plant, providing a product designed and customised exclusively for the application and conditions of that plant. In addition, we have a warehouse with over 10,000 components, which allows us to solve customer requests quickly and without delay.”

Established pump markets
PEMO PUMPS is active across many sectors including the following:

  • Anaerobic digestion processes: Used in the biogas production sector, where its pumps are used to load and recirculate OFMSW to anaerobic digesters
  • Ceramic industry: Where the liquid slip has highly abrasive characteristics as it combines a high concentration of solid product and a temperature that can reach 80°C
  • Chemical industry: Where its pumps can be customised with highly corrosion-resistant materials, they are often preferred for their robustness in applications where the mixture contains solid particles
  • Mining, Quarries and Aggregate materials washing: Where our pumps are used in feeding separating hydro-cyclons, floatation systems and to transfer slurries in ponds, yellowcake applications and water treatment plants etc
  • Filter-Press Feeding: This is an application where in most cases PEMO pumps has no competition, thanks to our DC (double stage) and TC (triple stage) pumps

New pump markets
PEMO PUMPS has been busy throughout 2023 with strengthening brand awareness through the major European trade fairs including: Bio360 EXPO (Nantes), Pollutech (Lyon), The World Biogas Expo and RWM & Letsrecycle Live in Birmingham. PEMO PUMPS already has and emerging presence in the aggregates, tunnelling and stone processing sectors, across the UK and French markets where the pumps are used for transferring slurry and feeding filter presses. Through the trade fairs, PEMO PUMPS is hoping to branch out further into the biogas and biomethane production chains and in fact, any sectors that require robust pumps.

Well-deserved success
During 2023, PEMO PUMPS celebrated its 42,000th pump placed onto the world market, across more than 100 countries, demonstrating why we have chosen this company as our Pump and Valves Company of the Year.

Cutting-edge centrifugal pumps
PEMO PUMPS has focused on designing advanced centrifugal pumps, with semi-open impellers and anti-clogging volutes that enable the transfer of highly viscous substrate containing fibres, filaments and large solid parts. This is highly advantageous over standard single-screw pumps, with the unique ‘HARDALLOY PEMO’ wear-resistant superalloy. Customers love the fact that the maintenance intervals are now only every five-six years, due to this advanced technology, which is welcomed during the cost-of-living crisis.

The Italian based powerhouse prides itself on a premium pump portfolio, with different flow rates up to 2,000m3/h and pressures of up to 24 bar. The range includes rubberised bodies and impellers, with ‘top of the class’ superalloy: PEMO HARDALLOY superalloy demonstrating high abrasion resistance and hardness up to 800 Brinell. This ensures excellent abrasion resistance even with fluids with very high concentrations of solids and pressures up to 24 bar.

Moreover, PEMO PUMPS can provide the maximum abrasive particle size that the pump can transfer and the concentration of solids in the fluid for each of its pumps.

The future of PEMO PUMPS
We asked Massimo Ghio what the future plans were for this Italian pump heavyweight, including sustainability best practice, “For some years now, the company has been committed to minimising the environmental impact of both its production departments and offices, with particular attention to the reduction of waste and industrial waste and their proper disposal. With the aim of becoming energy independent by 2030, we are planning new investments in solar panels, which currently meet 35% of our electricity needs.”

“For the mobility of personnel, we are orienting our fleet towards electric vehicles and we are also investing in new machinery that will allow us to increase efficiency and the ability to produce in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way.”

“In addition, we are always trying to improve our product to ensure greater durability in the process of use, reducing downtime for maintenance as much as possible.”

“In the short term, we are planning a steady growth of the company, both in terms of production and new hires. In recent years, we have increased our team by 25%, focusing on trained technical figures and workshop staff.”

“In the longer term, we are aiming for a greater internalisation of the company also in Oceania, the Middle East and South America, where, driven by mining, aggregate washing and recycling, we are aiming for growth in both numbers and specific skills.”

“We are honoured to be selected for Pump and Valves Company of the Year. We would like to express our gratitude and take this opportunity to thank Sustainability Today for its constant commitment to research and promotion of activities aimed at making the future greener and more sustainable.”
